The truth about acne.
I started getting acne around 12 years old. I am now in my 20's and still have acne! Over these many years I have heard a lot of terrible and untrue things about us acne sufferers. Especially now that I have adult acne. Now I can't speak for everyone with acne but these things are all true for me. Things I've heard range from:
"Ew you must never shower or wash your face"
"Haven't you ever been to a dermatologist"
"If you drank more water/lost weight/ate better your acne would go away"
People who never or hardly ever have acne are the first to jump to conclusions about another person's face and personal grooming habits. For starters let me just say that just washing your face or showering more often usually doesn't help. On the contrary it will give you dry skin which will make your acne worse! I also hate when people assume I don't care for my skin and that must be why I have acne. On the contrary I have a rigorous cleaning routine that isn't cheap!
Whenever I shower I use a clear glycerin soap on a washrag for exfoliation. I use a new washrag every time I shower to prevent bacterial growth. After my shower I pat my face dry, apply peppermint oil to my red acne spots and then apply an expensive moisturizer for combination skin. I also use wet cleansing cloths both morning and night again for exfoliation and again apply my moisturizer. All of this is pretty much just to maintain my acne! I still am getting breakouts!
I have been to the dermatologist many times and even prescriptions don't work for me. The only I have found that works is the birth control pill and since we are TTC that's just now an option right now! I have tried many many OTC and prescription acne treatments but to no avail.
As far as drinking more water/losing weight/eating better goes. I only drink water and tea and occasionally coffee, I steer clear of sugary caffeinated drinks and I try to live a healthy lifestyle and eat right. I actually eat better than I ever have yet have worse acne than I've ever had!
Basically what I'm trying to get to with this post is to not jump to conclusions about someone else's face. Do you suffer from acne? Do you get judged for it or even pass judgement on others?
